Common Data Set (CDS)

Learn More

We participate in the Common Data Set (CDS) Initiative to provide members of the higher education community and publishers with accurate, clear, and consistent information.

The CDS was developed in a collaborative effort between publishers and the educational community to improve the quality and accuracy of information and to reduce the reporting burden on institutions. Thus, the CDS is a collection of standard data items and definitions that are utilized by the higher education community and by publishers. Please visit the Common Data Set Initiative website to learn more.

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) collects information from first-year and senior undergraduates at hundreds of post-secondary institutions about their participation in programs and activities relevant to their learning and personal development. The results provide information about how students spend their time and how engaged they are at their institutions. For more information regarding the benchmarks or additional survey descriptions, please visit the NSSE webpage.

IPEDS is the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. It is a system of interrelated surveys conducted annually by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). IPEDS gathers information from every college, university, and technical and vocational institution that participates in the federal student financial aid programs.

The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, requires that institutions that participate in federal student aid programs report data on enrollments, program completions, graduation rates, faculty and staff, finances, institutional prices, and student financial aid.

These data are made available to students and parents through the College Navigator college search Web site and to researchers and others through the IPEDS Data Center.
